Gambling Addiction Checklist Quiz
If you answer 'yes' to any of the questions below, you may have a gambling addiction.
Have you tried to limit your gambling or stop it all together, but failed?
Have you lied or stolen to finance betting? Have you borrowed too much money from those close to you?
Have you jeopardised or lost any significant relationships, jobs or educational opportunities because of gambling?
Do you feel shame or embarrassment and fearful to talk about it with friends or loved ones?
Is your mind preoccupied, thinking about when you can next get online or place a bet, making it difficult to stay focused or in control at work or home?
Do you need to gamble with increased amounts or greater risk in order to achieve the same level of stimulation?
Do you use gambling as a way to cope with anxiety, loneliness or feeling depressed?
After losing money gambling, do you often return to try and ‘break even’ and recoup your losses (‘chase your losses’)?
How Do I Help You Reduce Your Gambling Addiction ?
Successful long term reduction of Gambling Addiction is a process of change, involving a number of steps.
How does your gambling addiction affect you and those around you?
Whether you bet on sports, at a betting shop, at a casino, or online, a gambling problem can place strain on your mental health and finances and also on work and relationships.
Whether you are running up debts or not, the feeling of being out of control or hurting your well being, relationships and future may be motivating you to seek help now.
Do you sometimes engage in risky or manipulative behaviours to gamble? Are your interpersonal relationships being affected? Are you using gambling to avoid facing other challenges in your life or to deal with stress or anxiety?
Are there financial or legal consequences involved with activities? You may spend both money and time and then feel shame or regret. You may even resolve to change and stop. However perhaps after a period of time you find yourself repeating patterns or searching for new ways to fulfil desires or convince yourself that this time you will be successful and everything will be ‘okay’.
My approach is to view you as whole, capable and fully able to make choices. As such we will work together, helping you to deal well with thoughts and desires around gambling and work to reduce your gambling addiction.
There can be a great deal of shame associated with any addiction. Often gambling or the extent of it, is kept secret from loved ones. You may have strained relationships because of your gambling. It can feel a big deal to admit to yourself that something needs to change. So then speaking up and ‘confessing’ to a partner or loved one will sound like something simply too big to do.
I listen and support. I never judge anything you have done or anything you might say. Sessions are confidential.
The main work we will do together is examining your relationship with gambling and, if relevant, risk taking, in a broader sense. What is the role gambling has begun to play in your life? How do you use it? Do you use it to ‘self-soothe’, to deal with stress and anxiety? Do you feel more confident and less self-conscious or more in control when engaged in gambling or planning your gambling?
We will look at the underlying reasons for your patterns. You may find that the underlying issues also really need to be addressed.
For example, has gambling begun to function as your way of avoiding important life issues or relationships? Do you ever use gambling or activities associated with it to numb yourself or suppress emotions and feelings that are uncomfortable?
We will find new ways for you to do well with challenges and thereby reduce the role of gambling activities and thoughts in your life.
Gambling creates a high. You may also find that planning betting or researching into opportunities also make up a part of your addiction. Gambling takes up space in your life and you will need to discover again how to live without it. We will plan this and talk about it thoroughly.
It is time to find alternative ways to deal with life’s ups and downs. It is also important to consider other ways to feel the ‘high’ you wanted from gambling. We will also consider if you need new ways to relax or nurture your well-being.
Gambling can be used to avoid addressing and working towards those things you truly want out of life. Parallel to reducing your gambling habit, I will support you, if needed, to re-discover confidence and remind yourself of all those goals you once wanted and those gifts you have to give to the world around you.
Moving from dependency or addiction will signal for you a movement in a positive and optimistic direction.
