Work addiction or Workaholism Checklist Quiz
If you answer 'yes' to any of the questions below, you may have some work addiction patterns.
Do you find every 'logical' excuse to explain why you need to work so much? You then spend more time working than intended?
Does work flow into your evenings, weekends or holidays? This includes using your personal mobile for non-urgent work emails or communication.
Are you concerned about relationship problems and health problems (mental and physical) resulting from overwork or preoccupation with work?
Do you sometimes feel guilty or weak taking a lunch break or when taking sick days, when genuinely unwell?
Do you find it hard to put off tasks (even when not urgent) or find it hard to delegate tasks that others could also complete?
Do you have planned healthy activities that help you relax, for example socialising or exercise? Do you sometimes work instead?
Do you like to look productive and busy, sometimes using work to feel important or be seen as intelligent or valuable?

How do I help you reduce work addiction or Workaholism?
Successful long term reduction of work addiction is a process of change, involving a number of steps.
How does your work addiction or Workaholism affect you?
What is driving your need to work harder and for longer hours? Does it stem from a compulsive need to achieve status and success? If this is true for you, you may also be a perfectionist, never entirely happy unless everything is ‘just right’.
You may be using work as an escape, to avoid going home to either face your partner and family or another concern, including loneliness.
What are the consequences of work addiction for you? You may not be sleeping or eating properly. You may talk about socialising or exercise, but in reality these often get sacrificed for work.
What are the excuses or arguments you use to justify your long hours or hard work? Maybe you feel you have to in order to get up the career ladder? Do you fear the negative reaction of your boss? If you are self-employed, do you fear financial loss or missing out on opportunities? Whatever your arguments are, the result is stress and feeling your life is out of balance. If you feel out of control or unable to take control, help is here. It is time to reconsider how you are doing things.
Sometimes workaholics engage in addictive or unhealthy activities, such as overeating, drinking too much alcohol or gambling, in order to find ways to relax or feel freedom from the straitjacket of work. If you can’t easily turn off from work, relationships, sleep and blood pressure can be affected too. You may be seeking help, since those behaviours or areas of life, are concerning you now.
My approach is to view you as whole, capable and fully able to make choices. As such we will work together, helping you to deal well with thoughts and feelings and reduce your overworking lifestyle or workaholic career decisions.
There can be a great deal of shame associated with any addiction. Often work addiction is about how you wish to appear in the eyes of others, be that at home or at work. It can feel hard to admit you have a problem to solve here. It can feel a big deal to admit to yourself that something needs to change and often ‘confessing’ to a partner, loved one, friend or colleague, sounds like something simply too big to do. It may sound like you are admitting to failure, on some level (which it is certainly not).
I listen and support. I never judge anything you have done or anything you might say. Hypnosis sessions are confidential.
The main work we will do together is examining your relationship with work and the issues that work can bring up for you. What is the role work has begun to play in your life? How do you view it? Do you use work to avoid other aspects of life, to escape, to deal with other stresses and anxiety? How do you deal with the stresses work itself create? Do you feel more confident and less self-conscious or more in control when engaged in work?
We will look at the underlying reasons for your patterns. These may go back many years and touch on other areas. You may find that these underlying issues also really need to be addressed.
For example, has work begun to function as your way of avoiding important life issues or relationships? Do you ever use work as a way to feel important, successful or valuable , to numb yourself or avoid emotions and feelings that are uncomfortable?
We will find new ways for you to do well with challenges and thereby reduce the addictive aspects of work in your life. Using therapy exercises and hypnotherapy, we will work on bringing back balance.
Working hard is often okay. It is when you feel compulsed to do so that something may need to change. You may view work as simply something to pay the bills or it is a way for you to find meaning and purpose. It is all about a healthy balance, in which you feel calm and that work has the appropriate role in your life.
We may need to look at your boundaries around time management. Do you need to implement healthy and clear boundaries around your work life, ensuring it doesn’t seep into home and leisure time?
It is time to deal better with work stress and also find alternative ways to deal with life’s ups and downs. It is also important to consider healthy ways to relax and nurture your well-being.
Working too much may be a way to avoid addressing and working towards those things you truly want out of life. Parallel to reducing work addiction, I will support you, if needed, to re-discover confidence and remind yourself of all those goals you once wanted and those gifts you have to give to the world around you.
Moving from dependency or addiction will signal for you a movement in a positive and optimistic direction.
I hope my London hypnotherapy sessions will help you create the changes you wish to see.
